George wanted me to officially announce the release of the new Muncie M22Z (2.98:1 first) gearset. It will have the typical helix angle of the traditional M22 gearset. It will also have the classic gear whine in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and quiet in 4th gear. The M22Z gearset was designed around using a 3.08:1 differential rear gear.

I discovered (with help from Jerry M) that the drain and fill plugs in my 3/69 build date Muncie M22 transmission were likely from either a late 1969 or post 1969 production M22. The plugs are made by Lisle and I have seen them stamped with a P, W (with underline), the Lisle script only, with the Lisle Magnetic 2 script and Lisle Magnetic 3 script.

A T10 shifter will work on a Muncie with a little bit of finageling. M20s have a 2.52 1st gear. M21s have a 2.20 1st gear. M22s have a 2.20 1st gear but a more aggressive tooth shape for more strength, than the M21. You can absolutely have an M22 with a 7/8th diameter countershaft, a 10 spline input and 27 spline output.

They never made a 69 Big Block Nova with a M22! I said well, im not sure where you got your info from, but the number on the Transmission is a genuine stamp of P9A**C and it also has a vin stamp of 19W*****. I said, there were several 69's built with an M22. He swears there werent, that they only built 69 Novas with an M20 Muncie. I beg to differ.

Muncie 4-speeds have varying helix angles in the gearsets. Typically, the M20/M21 gearsets have a first-gear helix angle of 26.4 degrees and an input shaft angle of 39 degrees. The reduction in the angle with the M22 is quite substantial. The M22 first gear has an angle of 14.5 degrees and the input shaft is 24.2 degrees.

I've installed them both.And In my opinion the M-22 is way better.The M-21 was close ratio but I've broken quite a few more of those,Than a M-22.The M-21 was good enough for a street driven cars,And racing.But the M-22 was far superior to it.I've only broke a M-22 twice.And I broke a M-21 more than 8 times.

Central Illinois. Apr 28, 2003. #3. I have used dino GL-5 oils, dino GL-4s and Red Line MT-90 in my Muncie. The Red Line oil shifted the cleanest and over time stayed that way vs what I felt was a decline in shifting ease with the usual GL-5 "80W90 gear lube". NAPA sells a GL-4 that also works pretty good but my vote is for the Red Line MT-90.

The M21 & M22 is a four speed, RWD or 4WD transmission. The M21 & M22 is a Muncie engineering design, this transmission is aluminum case, extension housing and side cover. The side cover has seven bolts and two shift cams. The synchro rings have 35 teeth and the unit has a 4 step cluster gear.

Make sure it's a real M-22. A lot of people think that just because it has the big output shaft and extra drain plug on the bottom of the main case that it's an M-22. The big output was standard on all Muncies starting around 1970, and the extra drain plug was also added later, and was available on OTC replacement cases.
